Stolen Renoirs Recovered, Six Arrested in French Riviera Museum Heist
Two Renoir paintings stolen from the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer last month have been recovered, and French authorities have arrested six suspects. "Madame Colonna Romano" and "Young Woman at the Well," both owned by Paris's Musée d'Orsay and on loan to the Riviera museum, were taken in a break-in that reportedly took the thieves less than three minutes. Two other paintings taken in the same raid, "Madame Pichon" and "Coco Reading," were dropped in the museum gardens as the thieves fled and recovered soon after. Sotheby's Lichtenstein Sale Tops Estimate as Whitney Retrospective Opens
Sotheby's dedicated Roy Lichtenstein sale, "Reflections on Pop," brought in $8.5 million, just clearing its presale high estimate with 96% of lots sold. The result lands in the same week a major Lichtenstein retrospective opens at the Whitney Museum in New York, giving the market result an unusually direct curatorial echo. Reporting via ARTnews.

With Frieze London opening 14-18 October at Regent's Park, the city's auction houses are front-loading the calendar: Sotheby's New Bond Street is running its Contemporary Evening Auction from 9-15 October and previewing Frieze Week lots including works by Banksy, Warhol, Hockney and Hepworth, while Christie's King Street has announced "Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation," running 15 October 2026 to 7 February 2027. Early Fall Auction Season Closes on a Solid, Unspectacular Note
Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips are wrapping their early fall sales with steady rather than spectacular numbers: Christie's postwar and contemporary sale on 1 October brought in $28 million, with strong bidding noted for Wayne Thiebaud, Yoshitomo Nara and Léonard Foujita. Attention now turns to Sotheby's November sale of a $450 million Impressionist collection expected to include a potentially record-breaking Van Gogh. Coverage via ARTnews.
